One name, two ways of working

If you searched for Instaloader, there is a good chance you pictured a terminal window: install a package, type a command with a username after it, maybe pass a login so the script can reach more of an account, then watch files land in a folder. That picture is fair. The command-line way of pulling an account's media is real, it is powerful, and for some jobs it is still the right tool.

This page is the other route under the same name. Instaloader here runs in your browser tab. Put a public handle in the field above and you get a snapshot of that profile as it stands: stories still inside their 24-hour window, every one of the highlight albums kept on it, and the profile picture in its uncropped form. Every frame comes down as the untouched MP4 or JPG, and pressing Save all has your browser bundle the whole set into a single ZIP right there in the tab.

There is no Python to set up, no package manager, no virtual environment and no command to remember. More importantly, there is no login. Your password stays with you, no cookie file gets copied out of a browser, and the lookup is not linked to any Instagram profile you own. That last point matters more than it sounds, and the comparison below explains why.

Command line and browser, side by side

Command line

vs

In the browser

Setup
Install Python and the package, keep both updated, work in a terminal.
Open the page on any phone, tablet or computer.
Often needed for fuller access; means a password or saved session.
None. No password, no cookies, no linked account.
What you can fetch
Broad: posts, captions, metadata and more, depending on options.
Today's stories, highlight albums and avatar from public profiles. No post archives.
Automation
Scriptable and schedulable, good for batches of accounts.
One username at a time, by hand.
Risk to your account
Heavy logged-in use can trigger rate limits or checkpoints on your account.
No account involved, so nothing of yours to limit or block.

Read the table honestly and you will see that neither column wins every row. A script reaches further. It can walk through an entire post history, write captions and timestamps to disk, and repeat the job every night without you touching it. The browser route does none of that, and it would be misleading to pretend otherwise.

What the browser route removes is the friction and the exposure. Logged-in scraping ties every request to a real account, and an account that suddenly asks for a lot of media in a short time can be slowed down, challenged with a checkpoint or restricted. When the lookup carries no login at all, that risk is simply not part of the picture. If what you actually need is today's stories or a highlight album from a public profile, the lighter tool is usually the better fit.

How Instaloader works in a browser tab

The whole flow takes a few taps. Open any step below for the detail; most people only need the first two.

Nothing in these steps asks you to prepare anything in advance. There is no config file to write, no folder path to choose before you start and no flag to look up in documentation. The page decides the file names and hands each file to your browser's normal download prompt, which means it lands wherever your phone or computer usually puts downloads.

An empty result almost always comes down to one of three things: a private profile, a mistyped handle, or no story shared during the past day. Highlights and the profile picture still show in that last case, because they do not expire.

  1. 1Type the public username

Paste the handle into the top field; the @ is optional and a full profile link also works. Private profiles will not load, so pick a public one.

  2. 2Open the result page

The page pulls up the live stories and the avatar, then lists every highlight as a separate album you can open.

  3. 3Save single items

Tap save under any story or highlight frame. Videos arrive as MP4, photos as JPG, as the original files.

  4. 4Save everything as one ZIP

Save all bundles the full set into one archive, built inside your browser and sent to your downloads folder.

What you get, and what you don't

The result page covers three things well. Current stories are the clips and photos an account has shared in the last day, and they disappear on Instagram's schedule rather than ours, so if one matters to you it is worth saving while it is still up; the timing is covered in more depth in how long Instagram stories last. Highlights work differently: the owner pinned them to the profile on purpose, so they remain there until that person takes them down. As for the avatar, you get the biggest version Instagram keeps, a real help when the tiny circle in the app hides the details.

Viewing is also quiet. Nothing is signed in on your side, so the people you look up never find your handle among their story viewers. If you only need one type of file, the dedicated pages for saving stories and saving highlights walk through each one on its own.

A quick word on quality. The page does not compress, crop or re-encode anything on the way through, so what you save is the same file that plays inside the app. Vertical video stays vertical, sound stays attached to clips that had it, and photo frames keep the resolution the uploader's phone produced. When an account posts a story as a plain photo with text on top, you get that composed image exactly as viewers saw it.

Which route suits the job

A simple way to decide is to ask how often you will do this and how much you need each time. Occasional, quick and limited to what is on the profile today points to the browser. Regular, large and covering years of posts points to a script, along with the setup and account risk that come with it.

Plenty of people end up using both: the terminal for a planned archive of their own content, and the browser for the everyday moment when a friend or a brand posts a story worth keeping.

  • BrowserSaving a public story before it expires, on whatever device is in your hand.
  • BrowserKeeping a highlight album or full-size profile picture without signing in.
  • BrowserSeeing today's stories without appearing in the viewer list.
  • ScriptArchiving every post and caption from a profile going back years.
  • ScriptChecking dozens of accounts on a schedule automatically.

Questions about Instaloader

Q

Do I need to install anything to use Instaloader here?

No. This version of Instaloader runs entirely in your browser, so there is no package, no Python and no terminal involved. Load the page, enter a handle, and the result list shows up a moment later.

Q

Do I have to log in to Instagram?

Never. Instaloader does not ask for a username, a password or session cookies. With no login behind a lookup, Instagram has no account of yours to throttle or lock.

Q

Can Instaloader download every post from a profile?

Not in the browser. Here you only get what a public profile shows today: live stories, its highlight albums and the avatar. For a full archive of feed posts and captions, a command-line tool is the better choice.

Q

Does the person know when I watch their story through Instaloader?

No. Since nothing links the lookup to an Instagram login, you never show up among the people who watched the story. The account owner sees no sign of the visit.

Q

Which formats do the saved files use?

Clips come down as MP4 and still frames as JPG, each being the exact file Instagram delivered. Nothing is re-encoded and no watermark is added.

Q

Can I use Instaloader on a private account?

No. Instaloader here works with public profiles only. If a profile is private, the result page stays empty, and there is no workaround offered here.

Q

How does Save all work?

One tap on Save all bundles every file from the result page into a ZIP. Your browser builds that ZIP locally and drops it in the usual downloads location, just as it would any download.

Q

Does Instaloader cost anything?

No. Using it in the browser costs nothing, and there is no sign-up form or account to register. You can run as many single lookups as you like by hand.
