- Highlight
- A named album of past stories that the owner pins under their bio. Unlike a regular story, it does not expire after 24 hours: it stays on the profile until the owner edits or deletes it, and anyone who can see the profile can open it.
How to save a highlight album
Look up the account
Type the username into the form above, or paste a link to the profile or to one of its stories. The result page loads the current stories and, above them, a row of circles: one for each highlight album on the profile.
Open the album you want
Each circle shows the album's cover and title, exactly as the owner set them. Tap one and its items replace the story grid, and the Save all button above them tells you how many items the album holds before you start.
Preview before you keep
Tap any item for a full-size view. Videos play with sound, so you can check that a clip is the one you remember rather than a similar-looking slide. Anything you only want one of can be saved right there with its own Save button.
Save the whole album
Press Save all and your browser fetches every item in the open album, packs it into a ZIP and downloads one file named after the album. Nothing is uploaded to us; the archive is built on your device.
Highlights, stories and the archive are three different things
A story is temporary by design. It sits at the top of followers' feeds for a day and then leaves the profile. Behind the scenes, Instagram can keep a copy in the owner's story archive, a private library that only the owner can browse. Nobody else sees the archive, and no outside tool can reach it, because it was never published. Turning a story into a highlight is the only step that moves something from that private shelf back into public view. If you want the archive itself, the owner has to export it from their own account; our guide to the story archive versus highlights walks through that difference.
A highlight is the bridge between the two. The owner picks stories, live or archived, groups them under a title and a cover, and pins the album to the profile, where it stays public for as long as they want. That makes highlights the closest thing Instagram has to an evergreen shelf. Brands use them for menus, size guides, store hours, reviews and how-to clips; creators use them for travel series, tutorials, behind-the-scenes runs and answers to questions they get every week. Because the owner chose to keep this material visible, saving an album is the most reliable way to hold on to a reference you will want again, especially since albums can be reshuffled or removed without notice. Saving the album rather than screenshotting it also keeps what the owner actually uploaded: full-resolution video with sound, photos without the status bar, and the original order, so a ten-part tutorial still plays back as ten parts.
Stories
vsHighlights
- Lifetime
- 24 hours, then gone from the profile.
- Until the owner edits or deletes the album.
- Who sees it
- Followers or, for public accounts, anyone who taps the profile picture during that day.
- Anyone who can see the profile, at any time.
- Where it lives on the profile
- Behind the ring on the profile picture.
- In the row of named circles under the bio.
- How you save it here
- From the story grid on the result page, one by one or with Save all. See the story downloader.
- Open the album's circle first, then save items singly or zip the album with Save all.
Empty albums, missing albums, and keeping your own
If the row of circles is missing, the account most likely has no highlights, or the profile is private and nothing beyond the bio can be shown. An album that opens with fewer items than you expected usually means the owner trimmed it, or that some of its stories were shared with close friends only, which are never public. Albums are fetched fresh each time, so a cover you saw last month may now hold different stories or be gone entirely. If an album fails to load at all, wait a minute and look the username up again; a busy moment on Instagram's side is the usual cause. When the story grid is empty but highlights are there, that is normal: current stories expire, albums don't. For other reasons a profile comes back blank, see why a lookup shows no stories.
Highlights are also worth saving when they are yours. Instagram does not keep a second copy for you, and albums can vanish after an account change, an accidental deletion or a cover edit gone wrong. Running your own public profile through SaveStories now and then, and saving each album as a ZIP, gives you an offline backup with the original MP4 and JPG files, in order and under the right titles. Keep those archives somewhere other than your phone, such as a computer or cloud drive, so a lost device does not take the backup with it. If an album has already disappeared, our recovery guide covers what Instagram's own settings can still bring back.
Highlight questions, answered
QDoes the owner see that I opened or saved their highlight?
No. The lookup runs without any Instagram account, so there is no viewer entry to add to their list. Downloading the files happens only on your device and sends no notification.
QCan I save just one item from an album?
Yes. Open the album, then press Save under the item you want. You get that single MP4 or JPG without downloading the rest.
QWhy are a few items missing from an album?
Items shared with close friends only are not public, so they never appear. The owner may also have removed stories from the album since you last saw it. What you see on the result page is what the profile shows publicly right now.
QCan I download highlights from a private account?
No. Private profiles keep their highlights for approved followers, and that content is not visible to us. The result page will tell you the account is private and stop there.
QIs there a limit on album size for Save all?
There is no cap on our side. The ZIP is built in your browser, so the practical limit is your device's memory and storage. Long albums with many videos simply take a little longer to pack.
QCan I see someone's story archive?
No. The archive is a private library that only the account owner can open. Only stories the owner has pinned to a highlight are public, and those are what this page saves.
QDo highlight videos keep their sound?
Yes. Videos are saved as the original MP4 with the audio track intact. If you only need the sound as a separate file, you can split it out locally with a tool such as VLC or ffmpeg.
QWhere do the saved albums go on my phone?
On Android, ZIP files go to the Downloads folder. On iPhone, Safari saves them to the Files app, where tapping the ZIP unpacks it into a folder. From there you can move photos and videos into your camera roll.
