What IGDownloader does

Think of IGDownloader as a form that does one thing. You give it a public Instagram handle, and it returns whatever that profile currently has on display. That means three things. Anything added to the story since this time yesterday, the highlight circles under the bio, and the avatar in its biggest stored size. Downloads come from the copy Instagram keeps on its servers rather than from a capture of the pixels on your screen.

No app, no extension, no linked account. Because IGDownloader never asks for your Instagram login, it cannot like, follow or post anything as you, and the story owner's viewer list stays free of your handle. The tool is free to use.

It is also deliberately narrow. Reels, feed posts and post links are outside its reach, private profiles stay closed, and it keeps no archive of past activity. A story that expired without being pinned to a highlight no longer exists on Instagram, so there is nothing left for IGDownloader to fetch either. Knowing those edges up front saves you from looking for buttons that do not exist.

Three things from one lookup

Most people arrive wanting one specific item, usually a story that disappears tonight. The result page shows all three parts of the profile together anyway, because they come from the same lookup and it costs nothing extra to see them. If you only need highlights, the dedicated highlights downloader opens the same result page with the albums in focus.

Current stories

Whatever went up on the story since this time yesterday, oldest first. Videos keep their sound; photos keep their original size. Grab a single item, or press Save all to bundle the set into one ZIP.

Highlight albums

The circles under the bio. Open an album to see every item inside it, then save single files or the full album as one ZIP.

Profile picture

Instagram stores the avatar far larger than the tiny circle in the app, and this is that larger copy. One button, one JPG.

How to use IGDownloader

  1. Enter the username

Enter the handle in the field at the top; a leading @ is optional. Only public accounts return results.

  2. Read the result page

First comes the avatar, which has a save button of its own. Highlight albums run in a row underneath, and the live stories follow as a grid, each tile stamped with its posting time.

  3. Preview before saving

Open a tile to see it at full size. Video plays with audio, which makes it easy to confirm the clip before you keep it. Nothing touches your storage until you press a button.

  4. Save one file or all of them

Save downloads a single MP4 or JPG. With Save all, every visible story (or the highlight album you have open) is zipped into a single archive built locally in your browser.

Compared with a screenshot or a screen recording

Before using any downloader, most people try the tools already on their phone. A screenshot is instant and works on anything. A screen recording catches video. Both are reasonable for a quick reference, and both fall short once you want the actual file.

The table below lists what each method gives you. It assumes a public account and a story that is still live.

—IGDownloaderScreenshotScreen recording
Saves a photo story
Saves a video story with sound
File is the original upload, not a capture of the screen
No app interface, progress bars or reply box in the frame
Grabs every item in a highlight album at once
Gets the profile picture in its largest size
Works without opening the story in the Instagram app
Your view never shows up for the story owner
Needs no website or extra step

The last row is the honest one. A screenshot needs nothing but two buttons, and if all you want is a rough record of what a story said, that is often enough. The trade-off shows up in the file itself. Because a screenshot only captures your display, the progress lines, the status bar and the reply field all end up in the image, and its sharpness is set by your phone's screen, not by what was uploaded.

A screen recording fixes the sound problem but adds others. You have to start it before the story plays, trim the ends afterwards, and accept that the video is re-encoded at whatever quality your device chooses. A notification arriving mid-story ends up in the clip. Recording a full highlight album means sitting through every item in real time.

Both methods also require you to watch the story inside Instagram while logged in, which puts your account on the viewer list. IGDownloader reads the public profile without a login, so the owner sees nothing.

The files you get

Video stories come down as MP4s with the audio still attached, at the same resolution Instagram delivers. A photo story or a profile picture arrives as a JPG. Any stickers, captions or doodles the creator placed on a story were baked into the media when it was posted, so they are already in your file; nothing sits on a separate layer that could go missing.

Save all makes IGDownloader gather every file and zip them inside your browser, with no server doing the packing. On a slow connection a long highlight album can take a moment, and the download starts once every file has arrived. Single saves start straight away.

What IGDownloader will not do

IGDownloader sees exactly what a visitor without an Instagram login would see, and no more. Private accounts, close-friends lists and profiles that require a follow request are closed to it, and nothing in the tool gets around that. An empty result for an account you know posts often usually comes down to one of two things: the profile is set to private, or nothing has gone on its story since yesterday.

Reels and regular feed posts are out of scope, and so is pasting a post link to download it. The tool sticks to the three items that sit on the profile itself: stories, highlights and the profile picture.

On a phone or a computer

IGDownloader runs in the browser, so the same page works on Android, iPhone, Windows and macOS. On a phone, saved files go to the browser's download folder; on iPhone you can move a video into Photos from the Files app afterwards. On Windows or macOS, look in whatever folder your browser uses for downloads.

A larger screen helps if you are working through several highlight albums at once, because the grid shows more tiles and the ZIP is easier to unpack and sort. For a walk-through of the desktop side, including where the downloads end up, see saving Instagram stories on PC and Mac.

IGDownloader questions

Q

Is IGDownloader free?

Yes. There is no charge, no account and no limit on how many public profiles you look up. You only need a browser.

Q

Does the person get notified when I download their story?

No. IGDownloader reads the public profile without logging in to Instagram, so your account is never involved. Your handle never shows up among the people who watched it.

Q

Can I download stories from a private account?

No. IGDownloader is limited to the view a signed-out visitor gets, and that view leaves out private profiles and close-friends stories. There is no setting that changes this.

Q

Is the audio included in downloaded videos?

Yes. Video stories and highlight items download as MP4 files with the original audio track. This is one of the main differences from a screenshot, which captures no sound at all.

Q

How do I save an entire highlight album?

Tap the album on the result page to open it, then hit Save all. Your browser builds a ZIP of every item in that album and downloads it as one file.

Q

Why is the result page empty?

Two causes cover most cases: the profile is private, or it has neither a story from the past day nor any highlights. Also double-check the handle, because one mistyped letter sends the lookup to someone else's account or to nobody.

Q

Can IGDownloader save reels or feed posts?

No. Its scope stops at the live stories, the highlight albums and the avatar. Reels and feed posts are simply not something it fetches.

Q

What size is the downloaded profile picture?

It is the largest version Instagram keeps for that account, which is bigger than the small circle shown in the app. The file downloads as a JPG.
